RE: Just in - 2014 Deluxe rack and top box
OK, here's the deal with the rack. The one you got from the Honda dealer will not fit. They think the 2013 and 2014 are the same, but that is not correct. If you have a 2014 Deluxe, you need to order the correct rack from Takashi at Samurider. He is great, got me my rack in four days! Strangely enough, the 2013 rack does fit the 2014 Black edition, which has the same aft frame configuration as the 2013. Go figure.
Secondly, I discovered why the installation is such a PIA. DO NOT follow the instructions! Honda would have you insert four big chromed spacers in between the rack and the spools that mate up to the grab rail. I struggled with this for hours before having it dawn on me that the four smaller black spacers need to go in between the frame and the grab rail, and you don't need the big thick spacers at all. When I did it this way it slid right in place. The pictures in the instructions are also mis-leading, as they are missing one bolt that is required on each side. The installation kit has a new rear black steel bracket, you need to install a bolt in the top hole and then install the aft rack bolt into the lower hole.
The original pictures show the rack kicked up a bit, it actually is supposed to lay flatter. Now that I have it installed correctly, Madam Retro tried the passenger seat with the top box in place and she reports it is super comfortable. It also looks much sleeker, with the rack laying level with the top of the seat and sitting about an inch above the tail-light.
I will post some pictures when I get a chance. Popgun helped with instructions on how to put the key cylinder together, now I need to figure out how to assemble the top box lock mechanism.
Since you asked, my garage is known as the "Manshack". It's a 1.5 car garage I designed and built from scratch, with a small workshop/exercise space to the left side. The car has been banished, and I am getting it set up for bikes only. The best investment I made was having a professional grind and prep the floor and lay down the epoxy coat. The prep work makes all the difference. I found a display rack from a hobby shop going out of business to show off all of my childhood Dinky toys. I was inspired by a really excellent Japanese magazine called "Garage Life". It's available for your IPad through Zinio. I'll post a few pictures here.
Here's the photos of the rack correctly installed. You can see it lays flatter and looks a lot better. I also use a First Gear tail pack, it works well with the rack if you don't want to use a top box.
The dolly comes from an outfit called Park 'n Move. They had a display at the Seattle Motorcycle show and I bought one there. it's really great, I drive right into the garage, put it on the centerstand on the dolly, and you can twirl the bike into any spot you want.
