If valve clearance maintenance has got one down, there are other options:
* No worries until the engine does not sound or behave (idle, start) just right. Then adjust. A lazy and passive approach.
* Acquire a legacy Honda CB inline-4 with hydraulic lifters.
* Get an electric motorcycle.
* Get a Moto Guzzi.
* Or gawd forbid, get a BMW opposed twin model.
* ... scraping the bottom: Get a single thumper.
I take the opposite view.
My whole life I have had no fear of taking anything apart and putting it back together.
I work in a different industry- but make a good living because of others fears of what I consider simple stuff- that a decent 12 year old could do if he was motivated enough- and can pay attention to detail.
The world would be a MUCH better place if people stopped thinking they have limits.
Not just mechanical- everything.
I just watched a video interviewing the girl that did Edge Of Tomorrow. (Great flick)
She said when she started- they put her into a program with a personal trainer.
She said she had worked out before… but once she started the program realized (paraphrasing)- “No. I’ve quickly realized I never worked out before”.
I loved watching the change in behavior of the people around me when I joined the Army.
Eye opening for many. Life changing both physical and mental for many. They will break you and reshape you.
There’s nothing whatsoever on a motorcycle that an average person can’t do, for some they just don’t want to learn, others don’t want to spend the time, so they spend the money.
I’m OK with both of those as long as they admit it. It’s when they say they can’t that I raise my eyebrow.
Want it on faster, OK. Don’t have garage space or tools, OK.
But don’t say you can’t because you are wrong.

There is famous quote from Henry Ford:
“Whether you think you can, or you think you can't--you're right.”
Good thing Henry only ran a factory instead of an Army- although he came close with Adolf.
Maybe his factory could have been better if he himself had served and understood he was WRONG. Most people think they can't do a LOT of things...and are mistaken and limited by that.

Anything. Agreed. Anything.

What makes one person pick up a wrench, another a book? --not that they are exclusive of each other. But is it curiosity? ...encouragement to explore?... does one grow up in an environment of "try it, it'll be ok" or "don't break it, or you'll be in trouble"?
I 'credit' my 3 older brothers for hearing from my dad "don't touch"...I think the poor guy with 8 kids, financially challenged much of his life got to me, his youngest, and said "no more!" as his other sons had torn things apart, fixed this, but not that, left his tools in places he had not, and wanted his things to be...his things.
Nice thing about life is we get opportunities to change the tunes to which we dance.
My father grew up in unthinkable poverty in West Virginia - born in 1934- 13 brothers and sisters. A devote religious father w/ a heavy hand / belt / paddle.
How do you credit your brothers on hearing from your father 'don't touch' as that is clearly wrong.
If anything 'successful' poverty thrived on self dependency- self repair.
That being said- as much as my father was a very hard worker- I never saw my father fix anything mechanical other than an oil change- he never showed an interest in my interests... although I suppose by not saying 'no more' I can say that he tolerated them.

a new skill can't be taken away.
...and it's never too late to learn one. Get in there and try it. if not willing to try, that sort of takes the wind out of the 'its too expensive' argument at the dealer.. if you didn't even try. its a simple maintenance operation & honestly, I chalk it up to either laziness or 'that's somebody else's job' attitude. The best way to fail is to not even start. even IF you don't like to do it, it gives you knowledge to challenge a potential gouge IF you would prefer to pay somebody to do it.
I pay to get my yard mowed. I can mow it. I don't like doing it. But i know HOW to do it. that's an educated choice based on experience driven preference.
Mark- I have a feeling we'd get along well if we were local- despite whatever ' ' misunderstanding / feeling / - from online typing..
I too cherish the triumph of learning...and have also learned from my own failures...and I have found countless times shops lie / steal..and I can do it better- for less- even when having to buy my own tools. I too- pay for my lawn to be done...even though I have all the equipment to do it. Experience driven preference backed with experience paying job- I make more in 1 hour than I pay to have multiple people spend several hours on my yard each week.

I’ve adjusted or checked the valves on all of my bikes.
Just don’t feel like doing it on this one at the moment, and seems less urgent than another brand might be, particularly when no Honda I’ve ever ridden has actually needed an adjustment.
The discussion of what one can and can’t do reminds me of building a new garage door, one of my pandemic projects.
Neighbors came around to see what I was doing.
“I’m building a new garage door.”
“You can just build your own garage door?”
“Well yeah… it’s just wood and nails.”
It is when people say 'they can't' out of lack of trying / fear - and the internet backs them up....
No.

What's clearly wrong? Giving my brothers credit? (btw, I was being facetious with that comment, trying to indicate that by using '...') Or was my dad being clearly wrong by saying "don't touch" things?
Doesn't really matter, my point that I was trying to make was that some people grow up in an environment where exploration in the mechanics of things was encouraged, and some people didn't. Still, one can move beyond the limitations others set for you.
