Re-gearing - beating a dead horse?

There is a guard (not the cover) that needs to be ground slightly from what I understand. Personally if I were going that route I'd just do the front sprocket and see how that is before considering a rear sprocket. With a front you will not have to alter the chain, with a rear you might have to shorten the chain, grinding off the staking link, getting a new staking link, and staking it.
