Yes, you are correct. I've been using the Ventura system for many years an two different Honda bikes and have covered thousands of miles with it.
As DJS mentioned, the brackets are bike specific and the racks are sized for those brackets.
It's a quick swap to change out either rack.
In this picture I have the sport rack and Ventura tail pack on my CB900F (919).
