Here is the way that makes sense to me. First you have to stop the bike and get off of it before you put the center stand down. That's a given no debate. I don't EVER get off a bike without putting the side stand down before getting off the bike. YOU may do differently but I always do. Might be because I am an old fart but that side stand is down before I get off no matter what.
So from that point I think it makes absolutely no difference at all if the side stand is down or up but for me I leave it down because in a worse case situation if I feel the bike becoming unbalanced I can always tip the bike back over to the side stand. (Belts and suspenders). On the CB1100 the side stand does not block the center stand nor is it in the way to use the center stand (on some bikes in may be in the way).
I then STAND on the center stand tab while pulling up with my right hand on the passenger grab handle. Using the leg more then the arm. I pull back a little with my left hand which obviously is on the left hand grip and the bike rocks back on the center stand easily. The TRICK is using your WEIGHT on the center stand to do the majority of the work. If I can do it any one can.
