If I was going to do it on my tank, this is what I would use, or something like it:

It is car door edge protector, however it is rubber. Between the friction properties of rubber, and the clamping shape, it should stay put, but should not scrape the clear coat when removing the clean/inspect the tank edge. It does not have any metal clips over molded either. If not available in rubber, my second choice would be polymer/plastic, although depending on how stiff it is, might scrape the clear coat during install or remove.. I dont think I would do clear, as over time it might yellow, and would show any water or dirt that might migrate inside/underneath.
