Don’t wait, Nachodaddy: tell the story.

After years of yearning for a motorcycle, my wife's friend, Diane finally was able to afford one. She took a riding course where she learned to ride a 250cc bike. Then she went to the closest Harley dealer, some 65 miles away and bought a new 883 Sportster. I rode it home for her. I carefully parked it in her garage pointing it out the door. The driveway was on a slight hill down to the street. My thought, which I didn't articulate very well to her, evidently, was that, when she was ready to practice on it, she would call me and I'd come over and put it on the street for her and she could ride around the neighborhood until she was comfortable with it. The next morning I awoke to Diane calling and asking if I could come help get her bike out of her neighbor's pool. She had been so excited, she couldn't wait to ride it. She was so surprised when she popped the clutch that she forgot everything she'd learned and the bike flew out of the garage, down the driveway and across the street, over the curb and through the neighbor's wooden fence, which is where Diane departed ways with the bike. When the other guys and I got there, the bike was lying on it's side at the bottom of the shallow end of the neighbor's pool. Headlight still shining brightly. The fence looked like Wiley Coyote went through it. The dealership named her "Commandant of the Harley Underwater Rider's Group." She learned to ride her Sportster and rode it all over Europe (where she was stationed as a US Air Force Nurse) and has had many full-size Harleys and other bikes since. This summer she rode several tours around the US, including the Route 66 tour with the "Women in the Wind." But, to my knowledge, she hasn't ridden in anyone's pool since 1995.
