I learned much from riding dirt bikes when I was young. 45 years ago we had thousands of acres of unposted land to ride on. We took our spills and learned about proper control of a bike in the school of hard knocks. That school taught me little about surviving in street traffic however, that's a different set of lessons altogether.
Another problem for newbies and especially some ladies and short guys like me, today's dual purpose bikes are too tall and have seats which are torture racks. Tall bikes are intimidating to some new riders which explains the sales of so many cruisers.
