Actually, the T-Dub is not all that great in the sand, as the front tire tends to "plow" or wash out in the loose stuff. And it is indeed a lot of fun. For my "real" trail bike I have my DR650, which is also awesome but I do lose my nerve sometimes in the sand, as I'm too old and too big to wipe out without dire consequences. Thus, the short, slow bikes makes it easy to paddle around and keep upright. Plus it is geared (nicely) low....

Suspension is a limiting factor on the T-dub, as is seat comfort (which would not be a problem on the VanVan), while the Dr is nice and plush

That is with the stock tire, which also follows rain grooves on the street.
