Guth, the HiLux was the original model name for the Toyota pickup when it first appeared in North America:
The legendary Toyota Hilux was, at one point, a staple in the North American market. It was introduced with a 1.5L I4 engine and was available with regular cab and short bed modifications. For its second generation, the Hilux featured an upgraded engine and more comfortable interior.
For those of us old enough to remember, Toyota also sold a modest 4-door sedan in the U.S. called the Corona. What an unfortunate name today! It morphed into the Camry. The Corolla was also available at that time and has remained in the line up.
At the same time, Datsun (now Nissan) offered the 1.6L 510 coupe. These could be set up to give 240Z’s, BMW 2002’s and other sporty coupes a run for their money.
