That blows.
I've driven countless bikes in trucks and trailers with just a tie down on each side of the handlebar...and gone around turns fast enough to slide the back tire of the bikes around. Stable as a rock.
If they don't want responsibility of a bike falling over they need to stop being the one to 'secure' the bike- that simple.
I'm a stubborn SOB- they would pay for the tank sooner or later...and I would make it crystal clear on the first phone call how I felt, how they are responsible, and how I would bury them in every possible way if they tried to screw me over.
Ask them what their reputation and time are worth.
