I wrote a message to Honda CS and they said "visit your local dealer". So I held off ordering the touch up paint simply because I was curious whether a dealership would follow through.
This morning I rode my '17ex over to Pro Caliber in Vancouver, WA to request a free bottle / pen of touch-up paint. The service guy initially told me "if Honda accepts the request, they'll just give you a new tank because we won't repaint it".
It's funny...sometimes when you make a simple request, people seem to hear you want the whole ball of wax. I told him I wasn't interested in a paint job, a new tank...I simply wanted some touch up paint at no cost because the bike was under warranty and I thought the staple shouldn't have come loose like it did. "oh...well, let's take a look" ...he walked out with me and I took the tank off, and he snapped a few photos and again mentioned repainting the tank...I said, really, I just want touch up paint and I'm good.
We went back inside and after waiting a half hour (which wasn't a problem checking out new bikes, oh my, the Kawasaki W800 in blue is gorgeous!) I finally gave up and told him I had to leave for work. He said he was having trouble with part number, so I gave that to him and he was happy about that and I left. An hour later he called and said they ordered a pen of ink which should arrive in 2 weeks, free of charge.
I've had good experiences with this dealership several times now. Sometimes we might complain about a dealership for this or that, but this was a small detail and they deserve a positive shout out.
I feel like I would've pushed for a new tank, just to see what happens, since the bike is under warranty.
Free touchup paint is the easy way out for them, but at least you got what you wanted
Perhaps if the scratch had gotten big, or if it were visible with seat in place...definitely. What I really wanted was to see how they would respond, as there's a decent chance I'll buy a bike from them in the future. I figure if they treat people decently in the small things, then that's a good sign. I get a different vibe from another dealership.
