It helps to unfold a cardboard box under the bike as a working surface - catches any spilled oil pretty well.
Obviously, you should not wait until the 600 mile mark to check tire pressures.
600 miles is a good point to also clean the chain and sprocket teeth. I use WD-40 to clean the chain - it also works well on any part of the bike that has has chain lube thrown on it. Be careful not to get any on the rear brake rotor. Put the bike on the center stand, in neutral, and turn the rear tire by hand to access the chain. Don't run the engine with your hand near the chain, unless you are an amputation fetishist.
Also a couple drops of 3 in 1 oil on pivot points - kickstand, center stand, footpegs.
