Greg, I was in and currently work for the Navy. The Navy teaches that electrons are the charge carriers and since they are are negative current flow is negative to positive.
And like you said, holes flow in simiconductors, not wires. The Navy doesn't teach it as well as they used too, so I get to bone up on it every now and again to refresh the shop techs. Some don't even know how diodes work...
