I think they have always looked like that. I recently replaced my right side handlebar switch (the kill and start switch assembly) on my 1978 CB400T and the wires end at a connector inside the headlight bowl. When I opened the headlight I was surprised how sloppy the wiring looked, like someone jury-rigged everything. I'm slightly exaggerating, but you kinda just stuff everything back in and kinda slam the headlight back onto the housing and cross your fingers you didn't crimp something!
