I wired mine to my battery, but never thought about it not switching off with the ignition...that's a good idea!
The USB did say 5 volt and it kept my big Samsung Note 1 phone pegged at 100% charge the whole time, I wish my car and truck chargers would do that. With GPS on, they can't even keep up. Maybe I'm over charging my phone and just didn't know it, but 100% sure was nice!
