I know this comment is going to be controversial, but attributing his life to the airbag is not conclusive. While I'm glad the rider survived, and his safety equipment likely protected him, his hard braking causing him to be thrown over the car on impact may have done the most good.
Every accident is different, the number of factors involved incalculable by normal scientific means, because all the factors aren't known - speed, angle of impact, rider response, etc. Head-on accidents have been survivable without the airbag, some with less injury, some with more. Wearing one could make you safer, but the point here is that the article implies it definitely saved his life.
All I'm saying is, we don't absolutely know the positive contribution of the airbag. It's like deer whistles on a car or bike.
