Why I'm switching BACK to Honda oil

I have sweating around the upper fins only on the left side of the engine. You can see in the pic after only a warm-up and 10mile ride residue on the fins. It will make its way down to the 2nd or 3rd fin and work its way around the side to the rear of the fins. One other member has had the same problem in the exact same spot. Could have been a bad run in manufacturing. I live with it for now since its not really a problem YET!!!

Edit: I use only Honda 10-30 full synthetic oil, don't think the oil you use created this problem.

Glad to hear this is more an issue with the bike. I will continue using the Amsoil then since I know it is a good performer.

5 W 30 is not a recommended oil for the CB1100. The recommended oil is 10 W 30 Honda Four Stroke Engine Oil available as GN4 from you local Honda dealer. Put that in your bike and you can feel warm and fuzzy all over knowing you are not going to hurt your machine. If you want, change it more often, but it will do no harm.

I know you all just had to post another oil thread to see if I was still alive. Although I have a herniated disk, I am still kicking and checking the forum for interesting threads such as this.

Sorry that was a mistake, I meant to put 10W30! No Amsoil motorcycle oil available in 5W30. Merely a typo

Oh no? We think Honda might be right about using their oil? I cannot see it. Obviously I know more than those engineers and have always used automatic transmission fluid, cut with water 50/50 with some added to the fuel for good measure. Someday I'm going to buy the shop manual and rewrite it for them.

You know, that actually looks like auto transmission fluid...are you sure...?

Luckily I am a mechanical engineer and I do have a some experience with this stuff Both as a hobby and a career. No snake oil here



My apologies, I need to stop making drama Really thought I narrowed down the cause of this weeping. Mine appears to be a bit worse though. I will have the dealer change the gasket in the near future if it persists.

Well of course I was just kidding you, I don't expect anyone to use transmission fluid.

However, there is no concrete evidence to support the view this is an issue with the bike itself rather than from using non recommended oil.

Kinda hard to blame it on the bike when one does not use the recommended oil. You see, Honda does not need to say why it thinks you should use the recommended oil but for sure it you use the recommended oil then you don't have to worry about the cause of oil weeping on a very young bike.
... a Honda. You know, the bikes that don't leak oil because their fit and finish and tolerances are so tight and they are. So to lose oil like this in this bike means the oil has to be thin, very thin.

Well it appears the weeping is happening to a few bikes (all of which are running different oils) and the bottom end rattling happened to my bike when I first got it (albeit much quieter). That is enough evidence to me to believe that a few bikes might have a minor issue related to the installation of the valve cover gasket. Shoot, I think it's entirely possible that bolts might not have been torqued to spec. When removing my header, the flange bolts were finger loose, below their prescribed torque spec. Crap happens. I've yet to find a perfect motorcycle, though I will argue that my CB comes really close

I don't mean to come off as hard headed, I love these discussion and being able to talk about details like this is exciting! I'm always more than happy to bring up technical details at any given opportunity!
