I own lots of copyrights. Every work of residential architecture I have ever designed. I license people to use them to build buildings. I also license others to creative derivative work from them. Though people pay me to design their home, they don't own the design. They are entitled to use the design one time to construct the building. The use of my work is relatively easy to control, although theft happens and one slips away occasionally. Intellectual property law has been long established and continually updated. That said, I had Guhl reflash my ecu, which at one time was technically illegal. Intellectual property rights laws affect pretty much everything invented, designed and created including software. Enforcing those laws is another story
