My recommendation is always to try it at one end of the spectrum, say 1 st position, and run your favorite road. Was that too soft? Come back and set it in the highest position and run the same road. now was it too stiff? This will give you the softest and the hardest to judge from. Need it softer, go down one position from full stiff and go run the road. Need it softer yet? Go down another position and go run the road. Organized trial and error will tell you which is the right shock position for your weight and riding style. If nothing else you get to run your favorite road a bunch of times lol.
Sometimes I will ride it in one position for awhile, and then get a wild hair to stiifen or soften it for awhile.
