When I purchased my Moto Guzzi in 2009, the dealer recommended that I use regular gas even though the factory recommended premium. He also gave me an article on why regular was a better choice. The main reason was regular out sells premium by a large margin. Because it does, it is usually fresher that premium, which can sit longer in the storage tanks until you pump it out. Ethanol has propensity to attract water and then there is the problem with phase separation. The longer E10 fuel sits in a storage tank, the better the chances are that it will attract water. If it sits long enough phase separation can occur. The ethanol, water and gas will separate into three distinct layers.
I used regular for the first year and then found a product that says it keeps ethanol and water in suspension and prevents phase separation. I have used it ever since.
Does it work?
My Moto Guzzi has as plastic tank. The plastic used does not like ethanol. Ethanol can cause the tank to expand and deform enough that the tank cannot be reinstalled once it is removed. It can also cause it to have huge bulges on the sides. Ducati had similar problem with their plastic tanks. Moto Guzzi switched to a steel tank in 2012 or 2013 because of the problems with the plastic tanks.
My bike is 7 years old and original tank looks the same as it did the day I purchased it. The tank has been removed and reinstalled a couple of times.
I use Star Tron, but there couple of other products that might work just as well.
