Getting engine covers off?
#9
There is definitely plenty of oil under the alternator cover migrating from the crankcase sump area. Any oil that gets on the crank-mounted rotor whips outward with force and would definitely find its way past a less than sturdy seal.

If you've ever started the engine with the oil filler cap off you would attest to that. And don't forget to put sealant all around the alternator wire grommet, not just the gasket surface.
