Stainless darkens with heat (in the presence of oxygen). Power makes heat... So as mentioned earlier, I don't mind the darkened headers cause it shows that the engine has been working and making some power. On my street triple they're almost black and its no trouble at all.
also the exhaust system is regulated as part of the emissions control and is required to last x number of years under defined conditions. Plated chrome headers probably do not pass corrosion requirements and under some conditions fail to meet regulations.

yep, all understood. I sold my 2006 Speed Triple to make room for the CB1100. The Speed Triple (as we know) is a superior machine by all objective measures, except, it was never a bike that I admired for just sitting in the garage. The CB1100 is a jewel that I like even when it is just sitting dormant. Now, if it only had chromed headers.. A big inch in line air cooled 4 is *supposed* to have chromed headers, darn it !

Ceramic coat them? it want be chrome but they have a polished aluminum look finish they offer. theyvwill also cool off very fast thanks to Jet Hot Coating doing the inside and outside?

It led me to search for 'chroming stainless steel', which apparently can be done. I may keep that in mind. No way I can afford to do it now anyway.
Maybe in some future I'd keep an eye out for intact headers from a crashed bike. Polish the exteriors so that the chrome job will look proper, then have them chromed.. I can dream, can't I ?
