In the old days, before fuel pumps, a plugged tank vent would just kill the engine from fuel starvation. With a high pressure pump, the metal of the tank becomes the weakest link.
I saw this happen to an aircraft fuel tank once. Crumpled the top skin of the wing before the pilot could get it on the ground.
