What I need to know about the CB1100...
#11
I don't belong to many forums. Actually only two that I am at all active on.

This forum is great don't change a thing.

Two reasons to be on an internet forum. Information and entertainment. Not mutually exclusive mind you but information is the primary goal here. Lets not have a bunch of pot stirrers please.

This forum has been up for almost 11 months now. In that period of time, a total of five threads have been locked, one of which was at the request of the original poster in the classifieds section.

I would add that the biggest moderation effort comes from forum members moderating themselves (thanks all). I consider myself a fairly nice guy but I can tell you that in person, around those that know me well, I'm certainly far more sarcastic than I allow myself to be here. That kind of thing just doesn't translate as well online as it does in person so I try to filter myself accordingly. Basically, I do my best to follow the example set by most of the members here. What am I going to ask? What is the best pipe? What map can I use on a Power Commander? How to defeat the speed limiter? How to put on a set of handlebars or a seat or a fairing? How to change the oil or adjust my chain? What oil to use? What octane is best?

This bike just doesn't offer any kind of technical challenge except for beginners or those who just aren't mechanically inclined.

This bike is not a mystery machine, nor is it exotic or quirky. It is instead a lightning rod for nostalgic, wistful discourse, something that is apparently beyond the scope of this particular forum. The moderation here seems conservative in the extreme. Time and again, just as soon as a thread get interesting or fun, it gets shut down. But I'll bet ya that there are more guys tuning in to see what will be said next than are actually ever posting; and I'll further wager that most of them see things like I do. Food for thought?

Red,

It would seem that you did your research on everything but this forum. I'd agree that the moderation here is conservative, at least when compared to some of the other forums out there that are nothing more than virtual pissing matches. But that's nothing new as the tone here was established very early on. You've made it clear that in your mind, you're a know-it-all when it comes to the CB1100. Wish I could say that about myself, but I can't as I've still got plenty to learn even though I don't consider myself a beginner and am somewhat mechanically inclined. If your knowledge is not something that your wanting to share without stirring things up, then there probably isn't going to be much around here of interest to you. If you're only hanging around here hoping for some online drama, you've simply come to the wrong place.

It's easy enough to find out if there are that many people out there that feel the same as you — start your own forum and let it rip. Anyone who is bored with this place might be better served by such a resource. Those people in turn won't be distracting folks here who are looking for less drama. In a sense, everyone wins.

Guth and Ferret.
Keep up the great work. This forum is the best. I work in a Prison, so I get enough drama at work. It's easy to type something with good intent, that can sometimes be taken the wrong way. Angel

Guth and All,

I'm a newbie to this forum. I joined it because I like the fact that I can ask a simple question and not be made to feel like a fool. You, Ferret and many others seem like regular guys who not only like the CB but like to help others without being too superior. Thank you for that!
Pissing matches are boring indeed!

Great Board! I am only a member of two boards, this one and the UK CB1100 board, although I am far more active on this one. I looked at several of the other boards while I was shopping for a bike, and I gotta tell you,(as have others around here already), the other ones made me want to just turn off the computer and forget about forums.

This forum is a lot like the CB1100 itself, it is civilized, and nearly everyone in this forum is mature, polite, and easy to converse with. The CB1100 has been called a "gentlemen's" bike, and many of the gentlemen who ride them participate in this forum. That probably would not be possible without Guth and Ferret setting and following the high standards that they have. I appreciate all that they do.

If this forum is not your thing, that's ok, if you think it is too boring and drama free, that's ok too, just don't let the browser hit you in the backside on the way out.
