Thank you for all the helpful suggestions. I did some further searching and found a couple of retailers selling through Amazon that should fit the bill nicely. I was able to order a gallon of proper ProHonda GN4 10W-30 oil, an OEM oil filter and an appropriate oil filter cap wrench for a total of $52. Because we have a credit card through Amazon, my wife and I have a "Prime" account that gets us free shipping on most items so it didn't cost me a dime over the sale price (no sales tax either). As a test, I only ordered enough supplies for my first oil change. If all goes well, this should save me the time and trouble of having to run all over the city to collect these items once or twice a year. While this may seem silly to a lot of you, I work 50+ hours a week at a local brewery and my wife has a talent for filling up whatever remains so, any time I can save on 'errands' like this is welcome.
Again, thanks for the tips.

engine heat over time or milage wears out all the extra goodies they put in oil, I read a artice about cases of oil sombody found that was 20 years old never open, they used it & never had any problems.

+1 ..oil is stable until used.

Very true. You've got a point.

No more worries then. Mine only sits on a shelf for 7 months + whatever time it was at the dealership before they sold it to me.

Benefit from my experience with oil filter ratchet handle adapters: the filter is really close to the header pipes. I bought the filter cup that fits the filter just fine, but doesn't clear between the pipe and the filter! I know there's one out there that fits (maybe it's official Honda, I bought what was at the dealership) but I think I'll just cut mine down a hair (a half-inch think hair) to get it to clear. Try before you buy!

I've done the same thing when I just cannot find the right stuff locally. Usually ordering enough oil for an oil change would put me over the minimum for free shipping. I used to source all the different oils needed on a Harley Street Glide via Amazon instead of trying to chase them down locally.
Ordered a bunch of Honda oil filters and crush washers from eBay since you can usually find a Honda dealer selling stuff online.
Aloha,

Shdwghst... Barkinshins has a 14 so he had plenty of room for the oil cup. You on the other hand have a 13. If you get one of the channel lock type filter wrenches as shown in the " How to do your own 600 mile service" thread in the How To forum, it makes changing the oil filter on the 13 models and 14 stds a breeze.

Anybody use Purolator Pure1 filters? I plan on using the oem for the first oil change for warranty reasons, but always used Pure1 on the VFR and worked out great. I'll most likely be doing a change of both oil and filter at about 350 miles this weekend.

I bought the official Honda part. It's shiny steel and about 1/2" deep. It fits the '13 just fine, so it should work for the '14 standard and DLX.
Honda sells them bundled with a filter. Buy the filter and the cap wrench is about $10 more.

I picked up this one the other day at my local shop. really nice, heavy duty especially compared to the ones you get at Autozone and the like, and the cool part is the 17mm nut on the back (Honda probably has this too) where you can use just your extension, a 17mm socket or a 17 mm open/box end wrench (Yamaha part number MTS-TLSKT-02-09....$11.99)
