Interesting reading

....worth reading in full, if only to get an appreciation of the obsessive detailing that went into this bike, which could only ever have had a limited target market.

http://world.honda.com/CB1100/engineer-talk/

Includes confirmation that the bike was designed with 40 and 50 year olds in mind!

Cool stuff. I didn't have time to read it all, but I liked the stuff about tuning the engine noise and character. They designed it to have something of a low rumble that is most noticeable at 3000 rpm. It explains why I have been trying to keep the engine around that spot when I am cruising. It just feels good.

What's great to see is the comments that allude to the fact that this bike was designed with the long view and wasn't a one off. Like designing it to meet Euro 2017 emissions, etc. I think we'll see the CB11 and derivations of it for some time.

I also liked to hear that they didn't try to duplicate parts from earlier models, that everything was re-engineered from scratch.
Funny how they knew and stated that they were targeting the 40s and 50s age groups and none of them look that age.

Thanks for the link squiddy. I'm a bit tired to read it all now, will read it in depth tomorrow. Just had a quick scan and you can tell these guys are so passionate about this bike!

Agreed, an awesome read - thanks squid!!

I agree with the comments with regard to being engineered for longevity. It also makes me wonder if they might at some point build another application for the base engine, but tuned for character AND air-cooled high performance...a factory cafe racer/"thruxton".

From reading the engineer's comments it sounds like there was plenty of appetite for it...

Sometime back there was a video of a Honda engineer riding the CB1100. His scripted comments very much went along with this article. Haven't been able to locate it in the past 6 mos. or so. Mahaps some computer literate person could locate it? Really enjoyable reading, many thanks.
