I've recently been considering giving my longer than average legs a little more room on my bike. The wonder of EBay produced a set of 30mm adjustable pegs for the bargain price of £40. The adjustment allows eight possible positions and I opted for the down and forward option. Fitting the pegs was quite simple but changing the pegs produced other problems which had to be addressed. On the right hand side I needed to lower the brake. The adjustment on the threaded rod from the brake cylinder allowed loads of movement to raise the brake lever but hardly any to lower it before the adjuster bottomed out on the brake lever body. After much deliberation I decided to cut approx 4mm off the adjuster rod. This allowed the brake pedal to be lowered to the desired level while still allowing it to be returned to its original position if necessary. Having the brake nearer to the peg allows more leverage and improves the braking effect.
The left side produced its own set of problems. Firstly, the heel kick on the side stand fouled the peg. Easy fix, bend it slightly to give clearance. Lowering the gear lever is simple, two lock nuts, turn adjuster bar and tighten nuts. The biggest problem was in having the pegs nearer to the lever. Because the foot moves from below to above the lever for up and down changes the angle of movement is increased. When I got the position for upward changes correct then the downward position was compromised. The solution was simple. Honda use a 21mm rubber on the gear lever and by changing this to a 15mm rubber (gas pipe hose) the angle of foot movement returned to standard.
I did a 200 mile run yesterday through the winding Yorkshire Moors and the new peg position is superb. No vibration and no clearance problems. The only adjustment I failed to make was to the brake light switch which my riding colleagues were quick to tell me about, a couple of turns on the plastic nut and it was sorted.
