Yeah i think ferret and I were both just stating that heat will be an issue. I put in my personal blurb about my personal feelings about the bike but it wasnt supposed to be a jab at you for wanting more power. I initially wanted the link as well so i can read/watch the information so thanks for posting it!!
if someone would do some internal work and can be proven to not cause undue wear and tear from the higher heat then id probably do it, depending on cost. everyone is different and thats what makes this planet so much fun... of course its also why we fight wars and stuff, so there is that.

Yes, please don't understand me. I was just trying to explain what is involved in raising compression and how I feel about doing it to my own bike.
I have absoluetly no problem with someone who thinks they would like to make their own bike into what they believe would make it better for them, whether that is by making more power, more sound (within legal limits) upgraded suspension, make it a cafe, make it a drag racer, make it a bobber, make it a tourer, make it a different color, whatever. There are a lot of things people do to their CB1100 here, that confuses me, confounds me even when it comes to modifying the CB1100, but that's ok, better than ok even, because even though we are all doing different things to our CB1100s, we are all fans of the basic bike... and that's very cool. A wonderful canvas that we all get to make a masterpiece in our own eyes out of.

Correct me if I am wrong, but many of Honda's engineering decisions surrounding the engine were constrained by the need to make an air-cooled engine meet emissions standards. Higher compression and higher operating temperature generate more nitrogen oxide, which is what motivated VW to cheat with their diesel technology. The reduction in power output per cc is the reason you need an 1100 where in the past a 750-900 would suffice.

Stichill, according to what I read about the development of the bike heat in the head area was a particular problem for the engineers, hence the oil galleries in the head and the fins surrounding the spark plugs.

Keven Cameron had a column about this very thing. Talking about more power equals more heat leading to melted piston heads, etc. Water cooled bikes could shed the heat easily. Not so much the air cooled ones. Thus the oil galleries, fins, oil coolers and the like. Not just on CB1100s

I wouldn't dream of doing any of the things I asked about that were discussed in the video. It was purely a mental exercise about something I did not understand. I appreciate the responses that addressed it.
Tomorrow, I'm going to a four-day dual sport gather in Hood River, OR. Close enough to the eclipse path that there might be some residual traffic, but I hope not! I'll be riding my F800GS. Weather forecast is perfect...maybe a little hot. We'll be riding dual sport roads all over the Mt Hood area. It is spectacular!!

Stichill, I agree.
Emissions disallows a rich mixture to cool everything down.
So at a very basic level- that is the biggest limitation to power out of this engine from the factory as far as Honda is concerned. The 2nd would be marketing... they simply don't have a need for any more power than it has.
That being said- for us, there is power left on the table if someone wanted it.
110rwhp should be both safe, easy and not change the easy low rpm ride of the bike. Could someone get more? Sure- but at much greater cost and trade offs.
#1 biggest gain/ limitation is cams. Everything else is minuscule in comparison.
#2 after the cams will be the velocity stacks.
And a good tune to throw fuel at it. With cams you will be able to take advantage of a raised rev limiter.
As far as this discussion- raising CR makes very little power. Sorry to say- the guy in the video is wrong.
That being said- Honda does list factory oversized pistons which technically would be 'approved & safe' even on an otherwise completely stock bike. They will increase the engine displacement and raise the CR- both by only a small amount though. Not worth the work.
This bike could use a mild set of cams to wake it up a little and a slightly more aggressive final drive.

I regeared my 2014 on Friday with a 17/43 combo. I'm loving it and recommend it to anyone that doesn't have to sit at 90 mph for their freeway rides and even then it's nice. Has anyone done cams yet? I read some posts about wanting to but haven't seen anyone do it yet.
