Does anybody else see a scenario down the road when the last few large displacement air cooled bikes appreciate in value if kept in good condition since they will likely go the way of the dodo bird after 2020? I'm just thinking in the not too distant future, people will be waxing nostalgic about "back in the day" when such machines were available given it's going to take a Herculean effort to keep them alive once Euro5 goes live. Then again, it's probably only obsessive gearheads that care or even notice anything has changed at all when everything is liquid cooled or electric.

That din't seem to happen to Porsche when they went to water cooled power. Everyone loves the extra power I guess + the cost for oil changes came down...

Funny you should use that example because the price of used air cooled 911s has actually started creeping up in the last several years. I think what you are saying might be right for ones that have been flogged and aren't in good condition, but the last of the air cooled versions kept in really clean and good shape command as much or more (often MUCH more) than their newer liquid cooled counterparts.

It is also quite possible there is light at the end of the tunnel: the union will disintegrate and various national jurisdictions will relax the emission controls for motorcycles to be commensurate with the total amount of pollutants that this particular class of vehicles generates. After all, multinational empires (I'm talking to you, Spain
) are going the way of Dodo...

There are so many doomsday movies and scenarios shown on TV that now people just dismiss them. It's the same as becoming unaffected by the tragedy we see daily on the news and the ever increasing violence in movies.
As the population of the world grows, so will the poisoning of the earth's soil, fresh water, oceans and air.
Plagues and wars use to slow the population growth. But it unlikely that any nation would be foolish to start a world wide nuclear war. And epidemics are usually quelled within months.
If it as little as 100 years, I think that only a small percentage of the population would get to leave. But where are they going to go?
It has been almost 50 years since Neil Armstrong landed on the moon. A manned 9 month trip to Mars is not planned until the 2030s. And would a small colony be any better off there considering its climate and lifeless terrain?

I thought Elon Musk just announced he was planning on starting to colonize Mars in 2020. Was just on the news the other day.

Can we please distinguish clearly between the pollution with particulates and the global warming/CO² hypothesis?
With the former we all must do all we can to combat the problem, with the latter we should all demand access to source data instead of output from propitiatory, unverifiable computer models.

Hold an emission tester probe over a freshly popped carbonated beverage and the CO2 readings jump. Thus far soft drinks are readily available.
Climate change is an ongoing process. I have stood next to ichthyosaur fossils on a mountain in the middle of Nevada. These guys swam in the ocean on this planet at one time.
Man made pollution is not good, obviously. Witness Beijing. Or the killer fogs in Britain during the industrial revolution.
Measures like carbon footprint taxes are hypocritical. Pay a fee and go ahead and pollute.
There is a lot of money being made in the climate racket. Like everything else, electric cars etc will be hugely successful when they are practical and affordable.
Speaking of the middle of Nevada, there is a lot of wide open nothing between the Sierra Nevadas and the Rockies, let alone vast deserts elsewhere on earth, where at least the air is breathable. might want to try colonizing that.
Sorry for the rant. I am a dinosaur myself.
