Ha! I've not tried my hearing aids with the helmet. I don't think I actually need them - I'm not THAT deaf... yet. As long as I can answer Maggie promptly(!!) I'm OK...!

Holy cow, Bazbro, talk about being an "early adopter!" I can see myself back then trying something like what you did.
I'd have been way too lazy to actually do it, but I'd think about it.

Bazbro, I did the same in the mid-70's. I took apart a perfectly good set of stereo headphones and stuffed them into my Bell Star 120, and then connected them to a battery-powered portable cassette player that I wore on a belt around my waist (this was several years before the Sony Walkman appeared). It was a nuisance. Ever try ejecting a cassette tape at 60 mph and flipping it over, with your gloves on? It's impossible! I ruined a lot of tapes as they unraveled and went streaming into the wind.
You owe it to yourself to try one of the latest Bluetooth-enabled in-helmet communicators. Hands-free operation, voice commands, excellent audio quality, versatile functionality, wireless integration with your iPhone and GPS, and relatively inexpensive. The Sena unit that I use is terrific.

We actually do have Comms - we've got Shark helmets with their own 'Sharktooth' intercom system. Very good it is too. But I only use it to chat (and receive instruction...!) - I've given up on music/radio.
