Well Ive had gout, and kidney stones and I would rate this right with them pain wise.
Couldnt get an appt with my regular ortho guy until tomorrow, so after another sleepless night of excruciating pain, my wife decided I needed to go the the ER. A battery of blood tests, xrays, sonagrams or whatever they are called etc showed I had no infection in my blood, and no broken bones. Lots of arthritis in the knee and something called a Burkes cyst in the back of my right knee. A saline drip to cure some dehydration, some morphine for the pain, a knee imobilizer and some crutches and 2 scripts for pain and nausea and they sent me home. Tomorrow I will go see the ortho doc and see what he says.

Ferret, best of luck with the Doc. Mon. I've experienced some pain (back, kidney) and can't imagine having a bear trap springing on my knee. Maybe some Newcastle Ale may help?

Went to my ortho doc today. He drained about 8 oz of a yellow liquid out of my knee. Looking at the results from the hospital tests yesterday he doesnt think it has anything to do with the torn meniscus, but thinks it is gout (which WOULD explain the excuciating pain.) and ordered some more lab work tomorrow to test uric acid levels in my blood, and in the meantime more pain pills and some steroids.

Low water intake - black tea - uric acid - kidney stones - gout. It's all related, my friend. Hope the pain pills give you some relief this afternoon.

I do drink a lot of tea and dont drink a lot of water, although it's the main ingrediant in tea lol) but I dont eat a lot of red meat, or organ meat, or fried food or shellfish, or vegetables high in purinol like asparagus or spinach which are known to be gout triggers. Mainly I eat baked chicken and white rice, small pork chops, baked potatoes, well cooked green beans, whole grain cereal, bananas, yogurt. The Colitis really restricts what I can eat.

I switched to green tea (from black tea) about two months ago for this very reason. It's certainly an acquired taste! Plus, my doc put me on Uloric to control uric acid.

ferret, I’ve suffered from gout on and off for 25 years. I now take ‘allopurinol’ in a daily low dose to control it, it really helps...as you know, gout pain is brutal. Drink lots of water and eat a bland diet until it subsides. Hope you feel better soon.

Drink genuine pure cherry juice to help?

I do eat cherries.
My ortho doc (very experienced. Director of local hospital, did my wife's hip and both knees and my right shoulder...and has known of our motorcycle riding for 20 years or more) seemed a little confused by all the blood work results and with the note on the hospital paper work that there was a Bakers Cyst in the back of the knee, which he seemed to dismiss saying it was caused by fluid build up, and I think gout was just a process of elimination thing, but he ordered the blood test for uric acid as a back up to his theory. He also said my bilirubin was elevated a bit, but not much, and nothing to worry about....whatever that is. He also said we are not going to worry about the torn meniscus at this point.
It is feeling a lot better tonight and the swelling is way down with the fluid drain and the pain pill and the steroids. At least I no longer scream when getting up or sitting in the recliner which I have been sleeping in (or getting up and down on the loo).... and my wife no longer has to help me getting up and down because I absolutely could not get up and down by myself before.
I'm not ready to climb back on a motorcycle just yet, but I can see it happening in the not too distance future. Must be patient.
