G60: The rituals, dance, signaling and negotiation protocols appear universally familiar.

That's hilarious, Gi60! My wife has a small, antique steel cowbell stamped "RING FOR NEBRASKA" that she uses to call me to the table for mealtime when I'm somewhere in the house.
If I'm in the (remotely located) garage, she texts me. The other signaling option is the big farmhouse bell on a post outside the back door. It's a perfect signaling device, but it's so loud that the person ringing it needs to wear ear protection!

"My wife is aware of that, and is currently very worried."
I may make that my signature line

Lots of talk here about cleaning out garages as well. I try to keep mine neat and tidy after I had a sort of reckoning a few years back. I was in the middle of multiple motorcycle projects and was doing a lot of late-night thrashing in the garage after work. I let things get very messy. I was, of course, single at the time.
Then, I went on a two-week business trip. In my haste to leave, I left my garage door partially open. After a few days, a few of my concerned neighbors who hadn't seen me come and go peered into my garage, and based on the condition, actually thought that it had been ransacked by thieves. Fearing that I had been robbed, and was possibly inside my house beaten or worse, they called the police. When I came home from my trip, there was a police report neatly placed on the stairs up to my living room. It said that neighbors called, fearing that I had been robbed. Police concluded that I was just an incredible slob, and secured my garage door for me. That was quite a wake up call. I bought each of my neighbors a nice bottle of wine as a thank you for their concern, and from that point on, make sure that, at least from the street, my garage is neat and tidy.

Are home invasions and beatings a routine thang so SoCal? ... Handy neighbours though.
[Un]fortunately, I have no garage to be ransacked.

Yes, unfortunately. At least in my neighborhood.

Great story GI60 I did a similar dumb thing many years ago by leaving on a camping trip and left my front door open. My wife and I thought the other had closed the door. My very good neighbor watched the house all day and finally concluded we weren't coming back so pulled the door closed which latched and locked itself. He also received a bottle of wine for his efforts.

Ha! Can’t tell you how many times my wife and I have left the house, each saying “I thought you closed it”, and then turning around to check. Our “good” neighbors are a tight-knit bunch who watch out for each other. Especially since my wife moved in, our house has become more social, and is no longer just where “that old biker dude lives.”
