I used to use WD-40 for a clean-up and then apply gear oil, but gear oil would spray all over the wheel and chain guard and front sprocket cover, so I decided to go with something specialized, I used Petronas, but currently on the muc-off cleaner and dry-lube, they are very clean, and smell nice (unlike gear-oil)

Mentioning front sprocket cover, I wanted to ask how often you take it off and clean it up from the inside, and give the sprocket and scrub and lube?

Never.

I have always let it cake up nice 'n' thick.

I’m pretty much the same as tod with great luck. Muc off every 500-600 miles and then maxim wax. Works great and tod is right.....these newer products even smell good.

When I used to use oil lubricants I’d remove front sprocket cover every year or so and clean up the mess. Since switching to the newer wax product there really hasn’t been anything to clean when I’ve looked under the front cover and at the sprocket.

I’ve been really amazed at how well the wax products work.

I used chain wax products for several years some 10 years ago. But in winter my chain still corroded orange because of the dang road salt.

WD40 also make a chain lube, DRB146 may of been referring to that.

Yeah, no… I appreciate the potential smarts, but I just threw the good ol regular stuff on there. As I mentioned, this particular ride was “get up and go”. But thank you all for the heads up!

So another nice, interesting thread slowly turning into a chain lub, oil & tire thread, gime a break, guys.
Back to confidence building. My fav road after a longer break is a local parking garage, with spiraling ramps from deck to deck. Try it if you find one. The turns are tight, and they are as hard as twisties in the mountains.
One other tip, follow your guts. If it feels as if a spectator “might think” you’re too slow for this bent, ... fine, so be it. Remember, most spectators sit in a very stable and safe 4-wheeler.
