Anyone ever have a helmet stolen?
#11
I had one cut off from the helmet lock. What is with that? The helmet is useless to the clueless dolt that took it. Simple malice? There is plenty of that around. Rolleyes

Now I may leave it on the bike, but don't bother to lock it. Perhaps the dolt will actually use it. But then, what will that do to the gene pool? Sad

Be safe. Ride often. Meet new friends. Beer

Years ago, left the helmet and gloves on the bike while I visited the girlfriend. Came out and they were gone.

Is that a manner of speaking, LR, or a wonderfully cryptic statement begging for a request for elaboration? If it’s the latter, how have you lost a helmet?

I’ve never had one taken.

I have never had a helmet stolen, but that is probably because I never leave it on the bike. Other than somebody stealing the helmet, there is also the concern that if you used the helmet lock like on the CB1100 a dog comes by to relieve themselves on it, or somebody dropping something else in it like an ice cream etc.

I have had bikes stolen though, but there is not much you can do against that if the thieves are committed.

I always carry mine around. Even when I haven't been riding! Nothing cooler than a guy dressed like Robo Cop carrying an awesome helmet. Just ask any eight year old Thumbs UpBikerBiker

I am always wearing it, 24/7. Better safe than sorry.

As a con, it smels a bit funny.

Quote:I once saw someone leave his or her helmet on the bike seat. A gust of wind blew the helmet off the seat, and clunk, it hit the ground. Not good.
This is a habit I have had a hard time breaking. Even after I set my helmet on my seat on a windy day to take a picture of Malibu Canyon on a gorgeous, but windy day. The wind blew my helmet off of a cliff along Piuma Road, and I had to climb down clinging to tree branches to get it. Then, rode home with a cracked, battered helmet and tossed it in the dumpster. I still do it for a moment or two to put on gloves, etc, but that image always flashes in my mind.

Thankfully, never had one stolen. But, I usually lock it in the trunk.

Had one stolen from the bars on my old Thrux. while parked outside of my previous job(late afternoon/evening). Brother also had his stolen from his mirror ALSO right outside his workplace(during broad daylight)
On both instances, bikes were literally parked "right out front" within <8ft from the "entrance"

Moral of the story: Lock it in place if leaving it strapped onto the bike, while being aware of your surroundings and be cognizant of the fact that if in a bad neighborhood, or if someone wants it bad enough, they will break the lock or cut the straps just to take it, even if that means the helmet is useless.

In my mind, there are 2 people out there that will make a run for you helmet- A.) Homeless crackhead thief & B.) Another rider with no morals. Outside of that, I'm a firm believer that nearly everyone else will just admire a parked bike and leave it alone.

I too, have dropped lids from the seat more times than I'd like to admit, it certainly is a bad habit. Carrying the helmet with you works, but the downsides are its something extra to carry/worry about, and more often times than not it will somehow get scratched/dinged while dangling around somewhere along the way

Yes I did. And it was kind of a nightmare. I was at a Casino and parked my bike in the motorcycle parking area. I used the helmet lock on my bike to attach the d-rings to the lock. Came out later and discovered that the helmet was gone and the dring was all that was left of it and still attached to the bike. I immediately figured that some complete a-hole, another rider who was parked near me, probably had a unexpected passenger (sleazy pickup, drug buddy, etc) and just cut the strap off the lock so he now had a lid for his passenger, which thet probably tossed after that 1 use. Most fullface helmet dont need the strap to stay on at reasonable speeds. Being that the helmet law in Cali means I'd be pulled over immediately, I called the cops who stopped by and asked them if they could maybe escort me to a nearby bike shop....they said no way. I didnt have anyone I could call at that time to bring me a helmet...and I was about 25 miles from home. I went on a forum for riders here in the Bay Area called BARF and put out a call for help. A stranger who lived near me brought me a helmet and drove back with me. I offered him cash for his help and he refused. It was about 4 hours after I first discovered the theft until
I got home.

I've never left my helmet loose on bike or on ground next to it--I'd be thinking about it the whole time I was gone. I don't even like leaving it "secured", but I do on occasion. I paid about $350 for my Shoei--not expensive compared to some brands, and I would never leave any item that cost me that much unsecured and out in public.
