Ducati Hyperstrada
#1
This bike had such promise to be a one bike does it all choice for me. It is basically a Hypermotard with bags, windscreen, and a center stand. The new 821 motor is incredible. Power everywhere and it makes all the right noises. Stock exhaust cans make some nice noise and it snorts and cracks when you downshift. Where it all falls apart, aside from the price, is the ergonomics. The seat is very confining and it locks you in so far forward close to the bars. It actually makes it hard to turn the bars and feels very awkward.

If they put this motor into a more sport touring oriented bike, they'd have something. Heck, is they'd offer a flatter profile seat, it might work better. It was still fun and I never turn down a free test ride.

I was very interested in this bike when it came out. It seemed like a mini-MultiStrada. Then I saw it in person at the local dealer and found it so fugly I couldn't bear to look at it every day, no matter how good it was otherwise.

At least the new Scrambler is a decent looking bike. Saw it at AIM and was very impressed.

The Hyper is probably the most consistently disappointing bike in Ducati's lineup. It was greatly anticipated, a good idea on paper, but in execution, a fail. I have three buds who tested Hypers and all were unhappy. A mid- sized sporty- tour thing from Ducati would be welcome, but the Hyper isn't it.

I like the Multistrada, but it's bigger than I want and too expensive (if the Hyper wasn't already enough). I can overlook an ugly bike if said bike has amazing character and/or performance. If I were to go back to a large ADV bike, the Yamaha Super Tenere would likely be my choice.

I really love the CB, but I have a bit of a dilemma. In order to really make it suit me, I am going to need to spend as much as $2000, but at least $1000. I am looking for a single bike to do everything which isn't easy. The upcoming Ducati Scrambler and Yamaha FJ09 both have my attention. I don't want to spend money on a bike I might sell.

At the end of the day, I'm still happy with my bike and such a dilemma is very much a first world problem for which I am thankful to have.

I think if they built something off the Monster 821 with a small half fairing and some bags similar to what comes on Hyperstrada, it would be neat. I bet Ducati's accessories catalog or the aftermarket would have this covered. The thought did cross my mind to buy a used Suzuki SV650 or 1000 and do something similar. I'm just falling prey to a seductive Italian.

Instead of building ugly bikes like the Multistrada (the original probably the ugliest), Ducati should revive the ST. Give it slightly retro looks, with a fairing and bags designed for it.

Looking at the latest from MV Agusta and now even BMW, why do all the "sport touring" models have to be tall ugly things?
