My dad had a 72 R5. he was in his 60s at the time ( about my age now lol ) and the bike was too high strung for him so be bought a 73 CB350 F, a nice docile 4 stroke. Anyhow my brother and I were out on our own by then and dad rolled the R5 out in the front yard and put a 4 sale sign on it. A guy came " walking" down the street and stopped and looked at the bike. He asked my dad if he could take it for a test ride. My dad agreed but siad he would have to follow along (on the CB). When they took off the guy on the R5 took off like a bat out of hell and quickly lost my dad. Dad went home and waited but the guy never came back. He called us brothers and told us what happened. We figured the bike was gone. A couple days later the police from Gatlinberg Tenn called my dad to see if he was the owner of an orqnge and black Yamaha (we live in Ohio). They found it lying in a ditch out of gas. We took a car and trailer down there and picked it up. Dad was more cautious after that and we always made sure one of us was there when dad was selling something.

Wow that's some story. I've only sold bikes outright to people I've known... and haven't done that in years trading in the last one I replaced. How does one allow a stranger to test ride a bike you are selling? Or do you just not do it? I'm fearful of that exact story happening again...

Well, I always check for a MC endorsement, I also take a picture of their drivers lic and lic plate on their car and I always make sure my full coverage insurance is up to date. Don't know what else to do.

Some people dont allow test rides, but I would not buy a used bike without riding it first. So I expect that others will want to test ride a bike I am selling. Some people want cash in hand for a test ride, but Im not carrying or handing someone thousands of dollars in cash. I carry enough to leave a deposit if I'm going to look at a bike.

Ya takes your chances either way.

My all time favorite was a 1978 Suzuki GS1000, heralded at the time as the best handling steet bike ever. It could corner like no tomorrow. I ground the pegs down, ground the exhaust clamps off, put holes in several pair of boots. You could whip it side to side in a single lane and leave big showers of sparks behind you.

A lady pulled out in front of me on a busy Rockville Pike one morning in 1983, and the cast front wheel implanted itself into the front of the engine. Didn't own another bike for 25 years, mainly due to my wife at the time.

My first bike was a Rapido, a 125cc 2-stroke Italian made HD

Hands down my 1999 XX Blackbird is the best bike I've ever owned. This is your do it all bike. Spot on fueling handles well and you can really eat up miles. Outstanding bike and to think if your lucky enough you could pick one up for about 5k.

I've been riding about 5 years and had 5 bikes so far.

Every bike I've had that I've gotten rid of I really missed. I started on a Honda Shadow - that bike was the perfect beginner bike for me. Enough power that I didn't get bored - but simple enough that I did all my own work on it.

Then I got my Warrior - that is my all time favorite Cruiser. Tons of torque, I loved the look and power. I REALLY miss that thing...it redlined at 5k and you better be holding on when you hit the gas 'cause it would toss you right off the back.

Then I got my Z1000 - wow. That thing was mischief plan and simple. I looked and looked for another one after I wrecked my Z, but no luck. Never understood why these weren't more popular over here....

Then i picked up my VFR - best highway bike I've ever had, you can do 500 miles like it's nothing. And the sound is perfection IMO. Sounds like a NASCAR. Timeless looks also - can't beat a red VFR in my book.

Then my CB - honestly I'm just now really starting to LOVE this bike. I go thru a phase when I first get a bike where I regret picking it up and want to sell it. I almost sold my Z, my VFR and my CB believe it or not! Then I'll take that ONE ride. That ride where I'll connect with the bike and really fall in love. I did that today on my CB. The handling on this bike is excellent - and I hit some twisties today and fell in love. Between the torque, the quick turn-in, the sound and the riding position I'm hooked. I was hanging off the side of this thing with a grin from ear-to-ear!!!

My dream bikes - V-Max, CBX (if they redo this classic I will sell everything I own and buy one the day it comes out lol), the new Naked BMW can't recall the name, Harley Road Glide, and another Warrior lol.

My favorite bike (at least the one I wish I still had) was my 1970 Kawasaki
H1 500 that I had from 1972 through early 1974. I bought it when I was a jr. In
High School in NJ and rode it all over the place. My then girlfriend, my future
and still current wife, went everywhere with me on it. When I moved to Florida
to go to college in the fall of 1973, I brought it with me as my only choice of
transportation. But alas, it gets cold in N. Florida in the winter and I froze.
Which explains the ridiculous fairing that I put on it in Florida. Well, the fairing
didn't have a heater... so I sold the bike to buy a car. And I have regretted that
ever since!!!

I've been riding since 1975, started w/ an F7 Kawi 175 endure. Lots of Hondas since then, several Suzuki XN85 Turbos, pair of GS1000 Wes Cooley replicas, DRZ400E (currently), couple 1979 CB750F's (bought new), several CB500/550 Fours, a very modified and fast V45 Sabre, and around 40 or 50 CB750's that I restored/rode/showed in the past 15 years including a dozen nice sandcasts.
