Buying the same bike twice
#1
I read all the time when guys are talking about bikes they've owned " wish I had never sold it". How many of you have liked a particular motorcycle so much that you bought another one of them.

I liked my 73 650 Yamaha so much I ended up buying 3 of them. The 73, a 79, and an 81. Something about that paint shaking vertical twin I just loved. Such an elemental motorcycle. A Japanese Bonneville if you will. Oil tight, reliable electronics, but not quite as good looking.

i bought a new 04 Yamaha FZ-1. Fast, handled well, good looking, a little tall for me, but one heck of a bike. I ended up selling it to my son who wanted it badly. Missed it so much went out and found a used 01, same color. Kept it until the CB1100 came along and sold it to my brother to get a CB. Even now when we are out riding together and his is on the FZ, I look at it and wish I had one lol.

Of course I sold the FZ to buy my 13 CB. When the 14 DLX came out I traded the 13 for the 14 so I have owned 2 CB1100's.

I like my ST1300 so much I wouldn't mind having another one of them with low miles on it. Mine has got almost 70,000 miles on it now. They say they will go 200,000 miles but mine is beginning to nitpick me with little repairs. Nothing major, a leaking rad hose I can't get to without tearing the bike apart, a cracked taillight lens that started cracking at a seam a couple of years ago ( there's a replacement sitting on the shelf), and now it seems my rear shock has lost it's springiness for lack of a better word ( that's about $750 to repair plus labor I think). I don't want to be bandaiding this thing along for the next 130,000 miles, and I really don't want a failure somewhere in North Dakota while on a trip.

One of my good friends has bought 5 RD350s, 3 FZ-1s and 3 Kaw Versys over the years and just texted me the other day he found a good deal on another Versys but he had just bought a BMW GSA and wasn't sure if he should buy the Versys. Lol

So how many of you have bought a bike, sold it, missed it and bought another just like it?

I bought a couple of the same two stroke Yamaha's back in the mid sixties, but for a different reason. They somehow got wrecked. I'm pleading the fifth on the rest of the story.

I've only had one of every bike I've owned.

At times I have tried to buy bikes similar - Ninja 250 - VTR250 SV650 - ER6n and have been very disappointed .
If I was still working and had money I would try the new SV650 when it's out.

How about buying back the exact same bike?

I had one of the first XR1200 Sportsters to be delivered in the U.S. I was working at a Harley dealer at the time. Rode the XR for about a year, but I was having physical issues riding the bike comfortably. Traded it in for a Road King. Hated that bike. Just wasn't for me at all. Fast forward a couple more years, the dealer never sold my XR. So I bought it back. About two months later, I had my first real wreck on that bike. After the accident, I could no longer fold my leg up to ride the bike. I ended up selling it privately. My heart still aches for that bike, even though it would just be a piece of art in my living room.

I've said this before, but I think shopping for a new motorcycle can be just as much fun as actually riding one. It would be too boring to buy the same bike twice.
Why is that? I guess it's because even to the average middle-class person, almost the entire motorcycle market is open to consideration.
The price difference between low-end and high-end bikes isn't all that great, within reason. We all spent "about" 10k on our bikes, but if we really, REALLY wanted to spend 14 or 16 or 20 grand on something we fell in love with, most of us could probably get away with it.

That is certainly not so with cars or houses or many other things. We know our price range, and must shop within it.
I wanted an S2000, I knew I could afford one, so that's what I got. I also admire the 911 or the new NSX, but they're simply not on the table.
With bikes, there can be A LOT of stuff on the table.

At any one time there are always plenty of bikes I would like to own and for that reason I'd could never imagine buying a duplicate. Too many bikes and not enough time.

I had a 1999 Valkyrie for about 10 years. Convinced myself I wanted another Harley. Sold the Valkyrie, bought a new 2010 Super Glide and hated it. Sold it, bought a used 2012 BMW F800GS. Loved the idea of that bike but just couldn't get use to the different riding style it required. Sold the BMW and bought another 1999 Valkyrie with extremely low mileage. I was perfectly happy until I moved into a one car garage house on a steep hill. The 750lb Valkyrie was just too hard to get in and out with. It just sat most of the time. Saw the CB. Test drove one, fell in love and came home with it. Couldn't be happier! I use every excuse I can muster to get out on it.

Haven't yet but would, every bike I've owned I bought and later sold for a reason. Some because after 8-10 years I was ready for a change, others because I wasn't as ready for a change as I thought I was.

Got the "blessing" (at least she stopped screaming) for a third bike. Heart says on/off road - brain says this short for his weight older guy knows better. Another Triumph or an airhead would be fun, maybe a k-bike. But why buy something so similar to what is already in the garage? A smaller twin? Would I be happy on a 400cc? Scooter - Is my man card up to date?

ST was best bike I ever had, looked for another but bought the CB1100; didn't need a project bike, wanted an everyday all roads dependable rider.

Decisions, decisions. Gotta have something to do on a rainy day.
