To check the condition of the points i test the coil side of the points/condenser with my multi meter against frame/ground.
When the points are closed there should be something like 100 millivolts ( 0,1 volt ) across the points,
( how else could you tell the condition of the points? ).
If there is a difference then one set needs cleaning and checking again, usually i clean mine at the beginning of every season
with a small strip of fine grain wet and dry folded so that both abrasive sides make contact with the poins at the same time and drag it several times in between the points until i get the right reading.
Clean points produce a clean spark.
"I’m enjoying tinkering with this bike. It’s a fun project and I’m relearning a lot of stuff "
And getting the enjoyment of getting it fixed in the end, priceless, nice job LongRanger!

That’s more like it.
- Gapped and static timed the ignition points
- Replaced the condenser
- Replaced the spark plugs
- Replaced the spark plug caps
- Flushed out the fuel tank
- Cleaned and WD40’d many electrical connections
- Rewrapped some exposed wiring on the wiring harness
Except for a little popping on decel, she’s running great again. Fun stuff!

I would convert into e-ignition, means getting rid of point, condenser, no more adjustment, near zero failure.

Maybe just use a Raspberry Pi Zero for the custom "ECU" and get your offspring to write the code as a science project.

PB, good suggestion, but if I went that route, I’d also have to get rid of the tire tubes, carburetors, clutch & throttle cables, etc. They’re all potential weak points as you know and prone to failure at the wrong possible moment.
In all seriousness, I’m not bothered by the ignition system. It’s easy and fun to maintain and part of what makes this bike neat to own, at least for me.
