Direct im- and exporting parts and bikes?

While I can't say what import regs are like today I can say that in the early '80s I bought a car from Canada, an MGB-GT V8. A contact from a Brit car club who had imported a grey market car himself helped me with much of the paperwork.The things that came up with the DoT and EPA kept me tied up for seven months and the car in an impound facility in NY.
For me to ever think of going thru that again would have to be for something that could never be had any other way.
But that B-GT w/ the 3.5L Rover engine was great.
