Sub-standard clothing (i.e. just jeans and a leather jacket in all weather conditions), extreme riding position bikes, do big distances on naked bikes, crappy suspension and so on. I used to do long days on my CB350K4 and it never dawned on me it wasn't the right bike for the job or somehow substandard. At a soon to be 60 I now I wouldn't dream of touring on my CB1100, I think you can tour on anything but that doesn't make the CB a good tourer compared to more focussed bikes. I like my long travel electronically adjusted suspension, heated seat and large electrically adjustable windscreen on my Tiger, I can ride for long days on this bike if called for. I know I would be suffering over the same mileage on the CB, it is a completely different beast, it will do it but I couldn't. That is not a criticism though, it was never designed and created as a tourer.
... and did anyone here "drink water" during their teenage riding tours on scrappy bikes? I don't recall doing so.
... didn't feel temps
... didn't care rain
... didn't need water (just much more gas)
... no pain in the bu... or backaches.
There was a date waiting at the other end of the road.
BUT is was not that much more fun than it is today ... during the first 100km

No, me neither. I laugh when I see an ADV rider with his Camelbak Hydration Unit in the middle of a built up urban area. Like he hasn't got time to get off the bike for 2 minutes to take a swig of water or that he actually needs one in the first place. It might make sense crossing Death Valley or traversing central Australia.

I too laugh to myself when I think of the 200/300 miles days on my old CB175 back when I was in my very early 20's. I installed some rear shocks from a CB 350 and went up a whopping half inch on my rear tire, and I thought I had a long-distance bike. I have driven my EX from here to San Antonio back (about 340 miles) in one day, and felt fine when I got home. So, no complaints here about the CB1100 not being a good bike to go places on. From here to California? Not sure about that one yet.

Amen to that. I was 20 and still wet behind the ears when I rode my little CB400F from San Francisco to Salt Lake City in one night, about 750 miles, by myself. Blue jeans, sweatshirt, and hiking boots. Gloves? No. Hearing protection? Nope. Electric vest or heated grips? I wish! Tire patch kit and compressor? Huh? Credit card and cell phone? Heck no, it was over 40 years ago. I continued on to Denver the next day, about another 500 miles, no worse for wear.
Boy are we spoiled today!

Not sure we are so spoiled. When I think about the most enjoyable trips last 18 months : jeans, shirt, helmet, nothing else and warm air around me. The more I push the limits with extra equipment, the more I get depressed before the engine even comes on ...
I do still rather get wet, cold, disconnected, and lost then perfectly prepared and sad.

I've toured on a Triumph Bonneville, a Harley Sportster, a Harley Street Glide, a Kawasaki Nomad, a Yami FJR and a BMW RT. They all worked because they were all what was available at the time. I would not call the CB a touring machine by any stretch of the imagination, but you got to run what you brung. I use the CB as a city bike, day rides near my house, and the Suzi is my touring mount with it's windshield, comfy seat, V-twin, and 6-speed. You can put up with a lot when you're young, but older bones and joints demand more comfort.

After seeing this I reckon the kid could ride the CB1100 at age 12 months-old? (that is, assuming the CB1100 had a DCT) ...

When I bought my 2013 CB, I viewed it as a "standard" all around bike. I found it in Scottsdale, AZ. and rode it home to Portland, Oregon. I just took my time riding it home and plotted my route to take 4 days with the 1300 mile ride. Averaged out to 300 mile days with many breaks to enjoy the ride. I had all my riding gear on, a backpack and some snacks and NO windshield. It wasn't a problem and one of the most enjoyable rides I've ever taken. You can "go home again" and enjoy the moments while doing it. Ride safe. R
