SSL ("https protocol") is of some utility for low to moderate value Internet commerce; to require or demand it for on-line publications such as this forum is just an example of incompetence and/or debatable intentions of those that push it across the web.

Further discussion of this topic hardly belongs in a motorcycle forum; I only urge the owner(s) of this publication to keep simple http access alive, even if for some pragmatic reasons the succumb to the push for obtaining the ssl certificate.

May I however suggest the show of some backbone here? After all, one can't ride a motorcycle without it...

I see now. Thank you alprider. Only Guth can tell us whether he proposes to change the security arrangements for the forum.

If I understand you correctly, the use of a higher level of internet security will be mandatory in the EU from the end of May. Does that mean you will be blocked from logging into un-secured sites?

By 'keyword', do you mean password? If so, using the same password for the forum as you do for, say, your banking is crazy no matter what level of security applies to the site.

alprider, thanks for bringing this up.

Folks, this is NOT a small issue. I'll soon be putting together an announcement regarding how it will impact the future of the forum and will then update this thread accordingly.

TLS (SSL went away a long time ago) is of very high value to anyone using a computer accessing a website, whether it be a banking website or a site such as this. It ensures two things:

1) That the content you are viewing in your browser originated from the site in the URL bar of your browser.

2) Everything you send back & forth between that site and your computer is encrypted in such a way as to make it practically impossible for anyone to view.

#1 is important for bank sites and anything having to do with monetary transactions (of any value, high or low) so that someone knows they are sending money to the right place.

#2 is important for a site such as this so that their login credentials are not co-opted over the wire when using an unsecure network (such as "free wi-fi" provided by many coffee shops and businesses).

That being said, the regulation specified, more commonly known as "GDPR" has nothing really to do with HTTPS, TLS, SSL, or any of that, per se. It has more to do with an individual living in the EU having the right to have their personal information remain private, have it purged from any information system they interact with, as well as having the ability to audit what personal information is stored by any entity with whom they interact. This includes entities not necessarily homed in the EU.
