So I had an old pair of expensive cashmere socks that developed a hole in one toe. Kept wearing them, hole getting bigger, but they're so comfy and warm I don't want to just toss them. Back in November, I'd been looking for another pair of gauntlet gloves to keep the 50 degree air from coming up the sleeve. Got to be January, then February, had still not bought any. I need some kind of air dam to keep that air out.... I spotted the aforementioned socks. Idea. I slit the toes open, slipped them over my hands and folded a bit of the elastic part onto my wrist, put my jacket on, and viola! Cashmere wristlets! They work great!

I see a cottage industry. Find a bale of cashmere-ish socks at BigLots and a sharp pair of scissors, you golden!

We used to darn ( sew closed) holes in our socks when I was young, stretching them over a light bulb. My wife just sewed up a couple small holes in two sweaters for me this afternoon. Sometimes you don't forget your poor roots.

I hate to sound more like a geezer than I am, but the days when we repaired and recycled things rather than throwing them away were better for us all and the planet that the throw away world that has developed.

Old holy socks become CB pipe polishing strips in my garage. My wife inherited the depression era roots of her ancestors. Old articles of clothing are repurposed until fully destroyed to perform one task or another.
I think we’re still dusting with an old shirt commemorating the opening of the California Adventure theme park in 2001.

Not as cool as yours but I use my old GI wool socks to store my extra FF visor when not in use. Noting worse than a scratched up visor to me.

Heck, I'm wearing a race t-shirt from 1984 as I type this!
