Rattlesnake Grade
#1
A couple of years ago my wife and I were touring the PNW..Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon and Wyoming. Our stop for one of the nights was in Lewiston, Idaho and running out of Lewiston is a road 129 in Washington and 3 in Oregon. This road had a famous name like the Dragon etc and it was called 'Rattlesnake Grade". It ran along the snake river and was quite devilish for awhile. From the town of Asotin (I suggest you get gas there, there isn't another station for about 80 miles) you go up a spiral winding hill, then a flat piece, then the Rattlesnake grade, then another flat piece, but the Rattlesnake Grade part is pretty cool. Here's a video of it (not mine). Thought you might enjoy. If out that way, it's worth the trip, road is great and scenery is awesome

I rode that a few years ago on my bicycle. Rode into Clarkston, WA for the overnight.

The feature ride of Pendleton Bike Week this year was the Rattlesnake 400.

I haven't been on the that road south of Lewiston. My family moved from New Haven Conn. to Pullman WA when I was in high school. At that time the Lewiston grade (heading north not south) was the thing. If you look close-up on the map you'll see the "Old Spiral Hwy". Driving down from Lolo Pass in the family station wagon was amazing, then up and up and up again around continuos hairpin turns. I was sure we were going to fall off. They've since made a new road that's much less dramatic, and safer.

I've passed through that area on my way to do some steelhead fishing a bit further south in Washington. If you do find yourself in that neck of the woods and you enjoy a good burger joint, then I'd recommend the 410 Drive In located in Clarkston, WA. Good stuff.
