It's coming: A new Honda twin ...

Just got a chance to look at the TransAlp review. The reviewer was impressed. And it's coming down under? No price yet.

Even the Chinese competitors knocking on their door know this. e.g. Moto Morini x-cape (Italian brand, Chinese motorcycle), comes with tubeless spoked wheels or cast. No doubt this Honda's quality is far superior but tubed tyres bother lots of people. But Honda are going at it hard on the entry level pricing and trying to make it up on the accessory packs, a good headline strategy, lure them in then upsell. It is quite a good looking bike, especially in the white colourway.

It is probably that Honda realizes that true off-road users prefer tube spoke rims since they often deflate the tires for those "rock climbing" excursions. Even the best tubeless rims seem to fail off-road (and sometimes on-road).

But yeah, for on-road I'd prefer tubeless spoke and cast rims.

Yes, for off road you can afford to dent or warp the rim some and the tube will save you. The fact that this bike only has a mild off road capability (no adjustable damping) would suggest no serious off-roader is going to go for the Transalp. It will be something much smaller or something like a Yamaha T7 and that ilk.

Tubes would not stop me from owning a bike if I liked everything else about the bike. Rode on nothing but tubes from 1965 to 1977 when I got my first bike with mag wheels. And several bikes after that came with tubed wheels. My 2003 Triumph T-100 had tubes. Road it all over the country. My brother's 2016 T 1-120 also has tubes. We have been on 7 out of state trips together. Having tubes would not have stopped me from buying an CB 1100 EX if I wanted one. Would not stop me from buying a Transalp if I wanted one. There are several readily available relatively inexpensive work arounds if you don't want to run tubes. Ask several guys on this forum with EX's who have chosen to go tubeless.

Like Alain Lee, my tube rims are now tubeless and for about 1.5 years now.

In theory, a "normal" flat is now fixable in minutes versus possibly hours if I had to open up the [rear Sad ] rim during a profuse, humid, 38C+ summer evening with maximum mosquitos getting a piece of you while you work in the dying afterglow of electric battery light.

I am enjoying watching all the new Honda toys at arm's length.

The 2023 TransAlp appears to be a great alternative to anyone who might consider an Africa Twin. If I were shopping for an Africa Twin today, I would consider the TransAlp.

The lump sounds like fun. I guess a test ride would have to be in order one day.
