Rust and Corrosion
#11
Some small spots of paint have come off my cylinders outside fins. It's a black '14, under 3k mi, garage kept and I've had it in the wet maybe three times ever. I'm not happy about it, but some flat black "gun kote" blended in perfectly. Like it never happened. Oh well.

I've stripped the bike down a fair bit to do a few mods and a bit of maint and the front of the engine is in a rotten state. I'll post a few pics tomorrow but it's covered in white fur, alloy corrosion and the silver paint has fallen of a fair percentage of the front of the engine.
I do keep it out side and do run it all year round but i treat it with ACF50 and give it prince when i get home after most runs in winter. Bit poor I'd say. I may take it up with the dealer before the warranty is up. I did have the spark plug manifolds replaces under warranty last year as the paint had fallen off them.
Typo - Prince + Rinse....

that said, Honda has some serious paint issues if they are that sensitive...I feel for you WK57ABF Undecided

I blow dry my bikes with a Blaster bike dryer after washing them. Water and associated caustic minerals have to sit and dry on the surface for rust to get started.

It appears he lives near the sea or around industry that most likely causes acid rain or some kind of mineral laden rain. I'd wash my bike every week and blow it dry. You can't really wax your engine, but I'd wax everything thing I could every three months.

It really is a terrible shame about the bike but you can't control the environment you ride in. I'd certainly keep it in a garage. Keeping it clean and dry is about all you can do.

Thanks to all who have contributed to my rust thread.

I am convinced that the cosmetic issues I'm experiencing are not down to my lack of care and maintenance, rain, salt, my island environment, etc. but is a manufacturing defect.

I am out of warranty so it's my problem. Will just have to try Krupator's solution of gun-kote. I see it's made in matt silver so will give it a go. Could someone recommend the correct grade - 2400 seems to be the one but I am not sure.

Beardy from London had corroded parts replaced under warranty and another UK rider had corroded cylinder barrels replaced by Honda under warranty but it's too late for me.

I'm in Holland at the moment and my buddy has just imported this wagon from Chicago, Illinois, 44 years old, original paint, sound chassis and comes from the rust belt.

Wish my bike was made by Chrysler!!!

WK57ABF, I'll find out what I put on mine as soon as I can and post it. A friend of mine had some in his garage and recommended I use it to touch up my motor. It's holding up well so far!

I didn't realize there were so many different offerings of the stuff. The stuff bakes on and cures so I put it on immediately after a ride as the motor was hot. It sure does stink when you put it on.

John, I grew up near Chicago and have owned a few similar cars. That one didn't spend it's life near Chicago. It was likely in the west or south regions of the USA during the part of its life where it was used everyday then moved to Chicago when it became collectable. Then it was garaged over the winter to protect it.

My first car after graduating high school in 1994 was a 1972 Plymouth Gran Fury, the trunk (boot floor), rockers, floorboards, rear quarter panels, and more had large holes and I thought it was one of the nicer cars I had seen in the area.
