Engine oil
#21
My CB1100 never saw 10W30, not even from the dealership. They only had GN4 10W40. Never a "ticking sound", not even on days of -25C riding. The air-cooled CB1100 lump was surprisingly pleasant at sub-zero riding temperatures, but the suspension is hard.

Now, the GN4 is not particularly special oil. It thins very quickly in hot weather. For that reason, I wonder if that is why the lump purred in cold weather riding and the clutch felt a little brash in hot weather riding? Anyway, none of that matter anymore once I decided to go semi and full synthetic.

For the last 35 years I have used Mobil 1 full synthetic 10/40 MOTOR CYCLE oil and never had a problem with engines or clutches on MANY different bikes .

Watched this in amazement some years ago, this guy took his truck engine apart after 1 million miles and found that it had very little wear and was very clean.
His comment at 05:50 "one gallon of 80/90 gear lube at every oil change" and a knowledgeable older mechanic was fascinating.

the explanation of the video;
Rawze here from Rawze.com -- Took my ISX CM871 engine apart at 955k miles as a preventative measure after it developed a small leak in an injector cup at cylinder #6. It has always been well taken care of. -- Since the engine was new, I have always used regular Rotella-T oil, but I add one gallon of GL-4 (or GL-5) 80/90 gear lube to it. At the time the enigne was disasembled, nothing special was done and the oil had 22,000 miles on it already.

I use only Motul in my Hondas and the Z900RS. The shifts are actually more quiet and it has a lot of good research and science behind it. I use their 7100 in both CB's and the 300V in the Kawasaki. In both types 10W-40 down here because of the outrageous heat.

Yeah, good stuff. Motul has good product. The 5100 behaves better too when compared to the conventional GN4.

Yes, 7100 10W30. For what it'worth, last week I had a chat with one of the Scandinavian top level 80s and 90s superbike racers, later 00's WSB engineers, and Motul is what he recommends. Not that he knows all oils, he said, but he's used Motul consistently for a long time and never had any bad experiences.
