Well yes, I could drive to work at 20mph tomorrow to radically improve my fuel consumption regardless of oil weight but I can't correlate that to the oil weight. There is an industry wide trend to lower the viscosity of engine oils. 0W-15 or 0W-16 has been around for a whille now in the automobile world to aid in fuel consumption.

It also helps that today's lumps are more efficiently cooled.
No need for heavier weight to mitigate overheating risk.
