Do I have ABS
#1
I just picked up a beautiful CB1100. Got it used with a thousand miles on it at a HD Dealer! Quick question. The tag say CB1100A21. Looks like it has ABS. How do I know?

Thanks in advance.

Best Wishes,

The front wheel and brakes will give it away. The front wheel will have a ring similar to the one on the back wheel of all CBs. That's the wheel speed detector. Also, the front calipers on ABS bikes have six pistons, the non ABS have four.

They don't put an ABS sticker on the tank in the US like the rest of the world, eh? I walked into buy mine, and would have paid for whatever they had. Got a non-ABS. Nice insurance, but I'm happy. Hope you got a good deal on yours. Someone bought it and wasn't happy with it... Hope you make it yours.

When you turn on the ignition, if your bike is an ABS, you'll see a small orange light reflecting the ABS letters (next to the check engine light and others) that stays lit. The light disappears when you start moving faster than 6MPH IIRC.

On the front caliper there is also an additional wire for the sensor just above the ABS timing wheel on the starboard side.

This additional brake line is only there, if you have the so called "combined ABS" (C-ABS).[1] Yes it's right, most of the Honda bikes which have ABS have normally this C-ABS. But some models just come with the simple ABS, so they have the ABS rings on front and rear rim, but no additional wire at front.

[1] With the C-ABS, operating the rear clutch will also actuate one (of the three) brake master cylinder of the right front brake disc of the CB (sometimes it also acts on the left brake disc, depending on the model).

Wow - I didn't know so far that on some models the sticker is missing and that it seems to be mandatory on European bikes.
On my CB 1100, the C-ABS sticker is below the gas cap (together with some safety instructions for the very dumb). Above the gas cap is the sticker for HISS (immobilizer).

EDIT: changed "wire" with "brake line" - sorry for my bad English

There is a difference between a brake line and an electrical wire. On the front caliper there is an electrical wire to sense the wheel movement during braking.

Additionally you test for combined ABS by placing the bike on the center stand, have someone sit on the back of seat and step on the brake with the front wheel off the ground. You will not be able to turn the front wheel if you have Combined ABS.
