I've been told this is better because it also keeps the pump cooler (cooled by fuel) vs. running it right down to the reserve. Whether it's true or not, I don't know....

This applies to cars as well as motorcycles. And as far as I know, it is true, although I suspect that the temperature of the gasoline is about the same as the air that replaces it.
